Basic setup

Documentation > Installation and Administration > Basic setup

This page tells you how to perform the basic setup of your CorneliOS software.

Change the root password

Warning: after installing a new CorneliOS system the root password will be "root", which means that anyone can login as root user. Therefore you should change the root password immediately after the installation process has been completed.

To change the root password, enter the following URL in your browser:

http://www.example.com/login

The CorneliOS login window will open. Enter "root" as username and "root" as password, then hit the "login" button.

You should now see the CorneliOS startup screen. On top of the screen you can see a warning message saying:

Your root password is insecure, please click here to change it now!

Click onto the link to change your account settings. A new screen will open where you can change your account settings. We strongly recommend to just update your password for the moment. Enter your new password in the "password" field as well as in the "confirm" field, then hit the "update" button.

Note that your new password must be at least 6 characters long, 8 characters or more are recommended for the root password. Try to use a random series of letters and numbers as root password.

Now click on "logout" in the upper right corner of the screen. You may now login using your new root password.

Security mode

Your site can run in DAC, MSM or SUM mode. The default mode is DAC - you will not have to make changes to the security settings if you'd like to use the system in DAC mode.

DAC, Dynamic Access Control, is the most powerful security mode. It supports various access rights plug-ins for all files and directories - including ring settings, UNIX permissions and Access Control Lists (ACLs). DAC is recommended for sites using collaborative tools, sharing features and a large number of users. DAC systems offer lower I/O performance than systems running in MSM mode.

MSM, Moderated Security Mode, is a simple but efficient security mode. File and directory access rights are automatically set and cannot be changed. MSM is great for Content Management Systems and sites used by only a small number of users.

SUM, Single User Mode, should only be used for system maintenance.

Further information about these modes are available within the Control Panel (see below). The only user allowed to change the security settings is the CorneliOS root user. Log into your CorneliOS system as root user:

http://www.example.com/login

You should now see the CorneliOS startup screen. Open the "Control Panel" (Preferences) under "Desktop & applications".

Now select "System Settings & Hardward" under "System, Maintenance & Security".

The upcoming screen will tell you which security mode is currently active. Click onto the "Security Settings" tab to change the security mode. The screen will reload and the changes will become active immediately.
